The sensor devices are usually installed on doors and windows and can be either of two types: wired and wireless. Wired alarm systems, as the name implies, are devices that communicate with each other through wire connections. Each device is usually powered centrally. Wireless alarm systems, on the other hand, are those that communicate wirelessly and operate on batteries. Wireless devices are easier to work with because they can be installed easily as they do not have wires that you need to lay out. Wireless systems also offer the flexibility of having many devices hooked into the system which may come in handy if you have more than a few windows and doors. There are systems that can be expanded to around a hundred sensors hooked into the network to cover all possible entry points to your apartment.
When they detect unauthorized intrusion, the device triggers an alarm (usually a loud siren) to notify those in the vicinity of the potential danger. Some may even have features that automatically notify the apartment owner of the potential unauthorized intrusion even when the owner is away on vacation. This is done by hooking up the security device with an automatic dialer function to a VoIP connection or to the phone line. It could automatically notify security and police personnel as well. This function, also called a remote home alarm monitoring system, are some of the modern innovation that apartment alarm system manufacturers are coming up with which increases the effectiveness of these devices in deterring crimes.
